Howland Hill Road

Have been in Crescent City, California the past few days. There is a road a short distance away, Howland Hill Road, that goes through Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Stout Grove. It is like a Disneyland ride, one lane, compacted dirt with lots of deep potholes, set in breathtaking scenery of giant redwood trees. My truck really rocked from side to side. A lot of people were driving regular cars through it, but I wouldn’t want to.

A tree that had fallen along the road. Lots of lumber there!

The park I stayed in was next to the harbor in Crescent City. There is a bike path along the water to the pier and lighthouse. Came across the baby seals below at the Northcoast Marine Mammal Center. Their mothers had abandoned them and dogs were getting after them. The one in the top picture still has to be hand fed. They have such plaintive cries, almost human-like. They will be returned to the ocean as soon as they are able to survive on their own.
