Brazos Bend State Park

I am at Brazos Bend State Park in Texas, around 50 miles from Houston. It is made up of 5,000 acres of land with lakes, rivers, sloughs, and bayous and 21 miles of beautiful intersecting hiking/biking trails. There are only about 10 other rv’s presently staying here and it feels like we have the park to ourselves. I’m sure there will be more people over the weekend. It is a beautiful park. So glad to be where there is no need to drive anywhere.

Did I say I wanted to see alligators? There are beautiful trails that go around the lakes, like in the top picture. I passed an alligator off to the right of the trail, in the grass near the water. I walked by it without thinking much about it. Subsequently read where you should keep 30 feet away from them. In the afternoon I saw probably the same alligator, but this time he was wide awake, facing the trail with his teeth showing. Thought it best to turn around, as I would have to go within 6 feet of him to pass him.

San Diego to the Gulf Coast

benson3.jpg

Left drizzling, congested San Diego before Christmas, heading to the Gulf Coast of Texas. Made three stops in Arizona—Yuma, Casa Grande, and Benson (seen above), at Escapee parks. Started to get some pretty cold weather at night that required the use of the furnace. Stayed at Rockhound State Park in New Mexico one night before heading into Texas via El Paso.

Back-in rv sites at Balmorhea State Park.

One word to describe Texas…vast! Stopped at Balmorhea State Park the first night. My pull through rv site is shown above. Beautiful park based on their spring water. An oasis in the desert. There is a spring fed swimming pool and canals run through the park. Not many people there this time of year, very quiet and peaceful. Next day started to climb out of the desert into the hill country. Stopped at South Llano River State Park near the small town of Junction, Texas. The land was donated to the state by a rancher who wanted to allow others to enjoy the area the way he had. In the summer, people ride down the river in innertubes. A lot of the park is closed from October to April to protect nesting wild turkeys. There are still trails and several bird watching blinds open, where you can observe birds without them seeing you. There were lots of red cardinals (below). The park presented me with a sort of bait and switch. It was beautiful when I arrived, so I decided to stay two days. The second day it was freezing cold, with biting winds making it hard to stay outside. Do hope to stay at these two parks again.

Cibola National Wildlife Refuge

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

blythesunset.jpg

I am in the vacation mecca of Blythe, California to check out Cibola National Wildlife Refuge.

It is amazing how many white trucks similar to mine are both in the park I’m staying at and in Blythe itself. Seems like 95% of the trucks are white. I got a white truck because I was in a hurry to get a tow vehicle and just got a truck that was on display at the dealers.

Sticker shock with diesel gas prices in California. One mile across the river in Arizona at Flying J the price was $3.27; here in Blythe it was $3.79. There was a traffic jam at the Flying J station. Reminded me of gas rationing in the ’70s.

cibolacranes.jpg

More sandhill cranes! Cibola is doing a lot of the same things Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge is doing…planting crops for the birds and flooding fields. There is also an auto tour route at Cibola.

Another prairie falcon (or American kestral).

Rockhound State Park, continued

rockhound.jpg

Rockhound is a small park and because of construction there are even less sites available than usual. It is worth a visit even if, like me, you are not a “rockhound”.

raptors.jpg

Lots of raptors in the area. These appear to be black or red-tailed hawks.

Percha Dam State Park, New Mexico

perchadam.jpg

All the sites are pull-through, which is nice. The Caballo Mountains in the background is where Caballo Lake is.

Wish state parks would stop trying to grow grass…they just end up with stickers. Could not walk Jake across their “grass” because his feet would get covered in stickers. They are really bad ones that are hard to remove and often leave splinters behind.

There are supposed to be bald and golden eagles in the area. This poor quality picture could be either an eagle or a hawk.

More cranes, trying to find their way.

Tioga Pass & Yosemite

Tioga Pass

Finally made the trek across Tioga Pass to Yosemite.

Impressed by all the European tourists in RV’s, in both areas. Many in CruiseAmerica rv’s. They have to be pretty savvy tourists to know about the above two areas.

Mono Lake and the whole area along the 395 highway is really beautiful and worth a visit.

Jalama Beach County Park

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

jalapa3-copy.jpg

Went to a beautiful California beach this past week Jalama Beach County Park, Santa Barbara County, California. Jalama Beach is just south of Lompoc and Vandenberg AFB, I guess about half way between San Francisco and San Diego. After driving through the non-stop urban sprawl from San Diego to Santa Barbara, it was such a pleasant surprise to come upon this beach. It is 15 miles from Highway 1, through ranch land and groves of oak trees. Not a strip mall in sight. If you are familiar with San Luis Obispo or San Simeon, CA, it is the same type of landscape.

There must be good fishing in the area. The pelicans would take less than 30 seconds to lock onto and dive for a fish. There were dolphins swimming close to shore and I guess whales are also frequently seen.

Hope if any of the surrounding ranch land ever goes on sale, that the state or national park system buys it up.

Cape Blanco State Park, Oregon

cape2.jpg

cape blanco

Cape Blanco has to be my favorite park (so far). My camp was amongst trees with trails leading from it to the beach one way and to the lighthouse the other way. You could sit in either area and watch whales spouting in the distance. It was often cold and windy, especially by the lighthouse, but a windbreaker took care of that. One young girl on getting out of the family car at the lighthouse said, “Geeze, is this Alaska?”

cape3.jpg

trail2.jpg

Able to walk Jake in the rain on this trail leading to the lighthouse without hardly getting wet.

capetrail.jpg

This trail ran along the Sixes River where it meets the ocean.

As an aside, the owners of the land on the other side of the river (where the trees are) are threatening to sell the land to condo developers.

otter

This otter came up to Jake and I while we were walking the Sixes trail shown above. He was really curious about us. Not sure if he is a sea or river otter. Seemed very dog like.

cormorants

Here are some cormorants. When I first saw them in this position, thought they were young birds wanting the wind to carry them up in the air. Later read their feathers get saturated and need to be dried out.

Pahrump, Nevada

Next stop was Pahrump, Nevada, at an Escapee park. It was a weekend and the office was closed, but a kindly resident took pity on me and let me park in a hookup site so I was able to run my air conditioning.
